Bertolt Brecht (1898 – 1956), is a modern German classic dramatist, well known for plays like ‘The Threepenny Opera’, ‘The Life of Galileo’, ‘Mother Courage’ and others. The importance of his poetic work has only began to be realised since his death. Brecht’s style of writing has a certain directness and simplicity, he was a genius for language. He left Germany when Hitler came to power in 1933, lived in exile for many years in Scandinavia and in the United States. After his return to Germany in 1947 he and his wife and main actress Helene Weigel founded the ’Berliner Ensemble’ and chose to live in the socialistic part of Germany. He criticised capitalism but was also disappointed about the way the "real socialism" turned out to be.
These are the more well known facts about Brecht… not so well known though are his beautiful, funny, melancholic, romantic, very direct, erotic poems.
Actinghouse Production wants to focus on the aspect of love and erotic in Brecht’s work. German actress Irene Christ and Maltese actor Mark Cabourdin are going to present some of his best poems, some scenes out of his plays as well as songs written by Brecht and composed by Kurt Weill. Rosetta Debattista plays the piano. Frank Hörner is coming over from Düsseldorf to direct the show. The audience might remember his directions of Fo and Rame’s "The Open Couple" and Ibsen’s "The Lady from the Sea".
Expect an entertaining evening with some surprises…
